HOW TO FORMAT A HARDDRIVE

 

Need:  Win98 boot disk with fdisk and format on it

 

  1. Put Win98 boot disk in floppy drive
  2. Turn on Computer
  3. Wait for boot disk to go through its process.  This could take a few minutes.
  4. Once A: appears, type fdisk and hit enter
  5. It will ask you “Do you wish to enable large disk support?”  Answer Yes
  6. Chose Delete Partition or Logical DOS drive
  7. Chose Delete Primary DOS Partition
  8. When asked, “What primary partition do you want to delete?”  Chose 1 and hit Enter
  9. When asked “Enter Volume Label” leave blank and hit Enter
  10. When asked, “Are you sure?”  Chose Yes and hit Enter
  11. It will now say Primary DOS partition deleted.  Hit ESC to continue
  12. Chose Create DOS or Logical DOS drive and hit Enter
  13. Chose Create Primary DOS partition and hit Enter
  14. When asked “Do you wish to use the maximum available size for a Primary DOS partition and make the partition active?”  Chose Yes and hit Enter
  15. Once the Primary DOS partition is created you must restart computer by choosing CTRL + ALT + DELETE  (make sure boot disk is still in computer)
  16. Chose start computer with CD-ROM support and hit Enter
  17. When A: prompt appears type Format C: and hit Enter
  18. When asked “Proceed with Format” Chose Yes and hit Enter  (This will take a few minutes to format drive)
  19. Once Format is complete it will want you to enter a volume label.  Just hit Enter for None.
  20. When A: prompt appears type C: and hit Enter
  21. Then type md win98 and hit Enter
  22. Then type cd win98 and hit Enter
  23. Put your Windows 98 CD in CD-ROM
  24. Then type copy d:\win98 and hit Enter
  25. Once it runs type Setup and hit Enter twice

 

This will start the process of installing a windows operating system.  The program will walk you through the steps of installing.
